
Listed below are summaries of the recent changes to AASHTO and/or OHD L procedures which impact the OHCMTCB training and certification process. Changes for the 2010-11 season affected procedures for Materials Sampler, Asphalt, Concrete, and Soils.
Soils
AASHTO T 84 & T 85 - Specific Gravity and Absorption
- Changed reporting from nearest 0.01 to nearest 0.001.
AASHTO T 88 - Particle Size Analysis of Soils
- In Sec. 8.3, changed dispersing agent requirement to "selected dispersing agent specified in Section 4."
AASHTO T 89 - Liquid Limit
- In Sec. 6.6, clarifies the requirement to obtain samples in the three specified ranges of shocks.
AASHTO T 99
- In Sec. 8.2, changed Note 9 to "The discarded coarse material may be utilized in T 224."
- In Sec. 14, removed the requirement to indicate if the material retained on the 19.0 mm sieve was removed or replaced.
AASHTO T 180 - Moisture Density Relations (10 lb Rammer and 18 in. Drop)
- Extensive changes were made to this standard. Please obtain the latest copy (T 180-10) and review the changes to sections 5.2.1, 5.3, 7.1, 8.2, 9.2.1, 9.3, 11.1, 12.1, 12.2, 12.3, 12.4, and 13.1,
AASHTO T 272 - Family of Curves
- Added T 224 to Section 2, Referenced Documents.
AASHTO T 224 - Coarse Particle Correction
- Appendix, X1.2.1. Removed "Note 3 does not apply."
*AASHTO T 310 - Density and Moisture by Nuclear Gauge
- Changed section references in the Annexes.
Asphalt
AASHTO T 30 - Mechanical Analysis of Extracted Aggregate
- Incorporated Note 2 into Section 6.2 and specified mechanical washer to provide results comparable to hand washing procedure.
AASHTO T 209 - Specific Gravity of HMA
- In Sec. 6.5, deleted Note 4 and replaced it with what was previously Note 5.
- Removed vacuum gauge from Figure 1.
- Separated Sec. 9 - Procedure, into four new sections. Sample Preparation, Mechanical Agitation, Manual Agitation, and Mass Determination.
- Section references updated accordingly.
AASHTO T 312 - Superpave Gyratory
- In Sec. 4.2, added reference to ASME B46.1
- In Sec. 8.2.1 and 8.7.1, removed parenthetical approximations.
OHD L-26 - Determining Bituminous Content in Asphalt Mixtures
- Replaced text and sample size tables in methods A, C, D, and their sections 3.3, 5.3, and 5.3 respectively to reference Table 1. Various references to those sections were changed to Table 1.
- Changed sample sizes in Table 1 based on OHD L-26 task force recommendations from the meeting held 1/6/10. Sample sizes are similar to AASHTO T 308 with the exception of the top and bottom sizes.
- Added metric unit notations in brackets, [].
- Add text to Method A in Sections 5.1.13 and 5.2.12 for IOC calibration.
- Added section 3.3.3 to Method C to allow alternative solvents.
- Added Method E, tank strap method or digital printout.
- Added Appendix A to show how to compute by Method E.
- Replaced splitting and quartering specification from AASHTO T 248 to AASHTO R 47.
- Added reporting of bitumen percentage to all methods.
